GreenGuard and the Environment
Our products are more than green in color. They are energy efficient, helping to reduce heating and cooling costs. They also help increase the durability of your home. Our extruded polystyrene (XPS) contains 30% recycled materials. And our insulation products are ENERGY STAR® Qualified as a part of the EPA’s Home Sealing Effort. Use of GreenGuard products in home construction adds points toward achieving both LEED Certification and NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) Guidelines.
New Construction
Using GreenGuard in your new home helps reduce energy consumption and increase your home’s defense against moisture infiltration—helping avoid mold and mildew damage from external sources.
Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Products
GreenGuard’s extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation products give your home superior moisture resistance. Because they are made of a synthetic material, they do not absorb moisture, are not a food source for mold, and are not subject to moisture-related damage and deterioration. They also retain their insulating properties over time, so your home will be more comfortable and last longer. When our XPS wall sheathing is substituted for wood sheathing, your walls are better insulated and have greater resistance to water.
Due to its high R-Value per inch of thickness and resistance to water absorption, our XPS insulation board is ideal for areas such as:
• Along the foundation exterior
• Below the slab
• Inside the basement wall
• Cathedral ceilings
• Below heated floors
Building Wraps
No matter what type of home you build, all exterior sidings will let water through. GreenGuard building wraps serve as a barrier to water infiltration, protecting your walls—particularly the wood-based structural portions—from water damage. In addition, air can penetrate cracks and seams in the wall sheathing, causing drafts and carrying moisture. GreenGuard building wraps create a barrier between the siding and wall sheathing to help restrict air infiltration. These wraps play an essential role in protecting your walls—and your investment in your home.
Butyl Flashing
One of the primary causes of water damage in walls is leakage around windows, doors, and other openings. Properly installed flashing is the key to keeping water out of walls and avoiding costly repairs. GreenGuard’s high-performance flashings are made with a butyl adhesive—not asphalt—that is 100% virgin rubber and has no VOC emissions. The flashings adhere in a broad range of temperatures, and they stick tight over time. When building a new home or an addition, make sure all the openings are protected with GreenGuard flashings.
Residing
If you’re residing your home, your contractor will handle the job in one of two ways—by tearing off the old siding first or by installing new siding directly over the old siding. Either approach is perfectly legitimate, depending on the situation with your walls and your objective in residing your home.
Siding Installed Following Tear-off of Old Siding
If your wall sheathing is in good condition, this installation is much like new construction. It is an opportunity to create a wall system that is more resistant to water and air infiltration. GreenGuard products for this application include building wraps, seam tape, and window flashing (if windows are replaced.) For installations of vinyl, wood, or fiber cement siding, RainDrop® building wrap can be used to create a drainage space behind the siding. For maximum protection, DC14 is an XPS drainage mat with drainage and drying capabilities on both sides.
XPS Underlayment Over Existing Siding
Contractors typically apply GreenGuard XPS underlayment over existing siding when vinyl siding is being used. Covering the old siding with a single layer of XPS underlayment does several useful things:
• Provides a level surface on which to install new siding for a smooth, even wall
• Helps block water that gets behind the new siding
• Helps reduce or eliminate drafts, if the seams are taped
• Adds insulation to the exterior of your wall
GreenGuard siding underlayments are the very best. They are stiffer, more resistant to water absorption, and less prone to crumbling than common “bead-board” type underlayments.
Reflective Insulation
Some GreenGuard underlayments come with a reflective facer. Reflective surfaces enhance insulating materials by reflecting radiant heat. Performance of reflective surface products can be confusing and subject to some exaggerated claims. For additional information, please see the
